I love watching other people's gear videos, and in 2018 I realised I'd never made one. So here it is: everything in (and out of) my camera bag, from the a6500 and my lenses to the little gadgets that saved my day more than once.
The bags
My main bag is a Lowepro ProTactic 450. It has a laptop pocket and everything fits, but guys, you can't imagine how heavy it gets. For vlogging on the road I carry a smaller Lowepro, where my vlog setup and the GorillaPod fit perfectly. When I travel I bring everything, chargers included. On a job I try to travel as light as possible.
Camera and lenses
My main camera is the Sony a6500, still a great camera for the price. Most of the time it wears the Sigma 16mm f/1.4. When it doesn't, it has the Sony 18-105mm: very well made, pretty heavy, and great for b-roll, video clips and portraits. Then there's a fully manual 35mm for Sony E-mount, all glass and steel. It's hard to keep focus on people, but it's lovely for pictures. Finally the 16-50mm kit lens: tiny, sharp enough, and great on the gimbal.
Audio, action cam and light
A Tascam audio recorder goes to every wedding. I plug it into the church amplifier for the priest's speech, or use it for interviews. Having a clean audio backup has saved me so many times. There's an old GoPro Hero 3+ with a rotating gadget for 360-degree time-lapses (I used it in Corfu). I'm looking forward to upgrading to a Hero 6, as the fisheye bugs me a bit.
The thing that saved my life more than once is a small LED light from Aputure, around 60 bucks, with gels and a mount. It's always in my bag. I also carry ND filters (key for daylight), a pouch of mounts and attachments, my Lensball, a set of small screwdrivers I bought for my drone, duct tape and insulating tape.
Monitor, tripods and stabiliser
I used to vlog with a 5-inch external monitor, but on top of the camera on a GorillaPod it looked ridiculous and was heavy. Now I use a vlogging mirror that weighs almost nothing. For support I have the GorillaPod, a small Manfrotto tripod that I also use to balance my gimbal, and a new mini tripod with a removable head and a phone mount. My Zhiyun Crane V2 came from swapping my old Canon Legria camcorder. It takes the a6500 with either the 16mm or the 18-105.
The drone bag
The drone doesn't fit in the big bag. My DJI Spark lives in its own small case, and there's also a PolarPro case that holds the drone itself. I'm not a professional pilot, I'm still learning, and I was already thinking about a Mavic Air.
