I already had the Intex magnetic light on our above-ground pool and it did the job. Then a LyLmLe LED light arrived in the mail, at less than half the price and with an app, and it changed my mind.
The Intex light: fine, but uncomfortable
Our pool is a 6 × 3 m Intex Ultra XTR Frame. The light I had was Intex's own magnetic model: two pieces held together by a magnet, one on the outside of the pool wall and one on the inside. It works pretty OK, but there's one big annoyance. With my frame, to switch it on or off you have to put your hand inside the pool, which is really uncomfortable. And if you forget it on, it stays on until you go and switch it off. Back in 2022 it cost around 100 euros.
The LyLmLe: unboxing and setup
In the box there's basically just the light. You hook it over the wall of your Intex pool and control it from your phone via Bluetooth, which is really convenient. The app I used on my iPhone is called DuoCo Strip. Setting it up was quick.
Head to head
The LyLmLe is a 10 W light. The Intex doesn't state its power (I think it's around 7 W, but don't quote me). In terms of light, they're almost the same, and 10 W is fine for a 6 × 3 m pool like mine. The big difference is the app: you can create scenarios and set it to switch off after a while, so you never leave it burning all night. And it costs less than 39, compared to about 100 for the Intex.
Now I have both, one on each side of the pool, and they work fine together. My personal opinion: if I had known before, I would have gone straight for the LyLmLe. Build quality is the open question. Only time will tell how it holds up.
This was a bit off-topic for a channel about 3D printers and tech, but I have kids, and the pool is a big part of our summers.
