This is the second automatic litter box I've tried, and I think I'll stop here. The PetSnowy Snow+ looks like a piece of 1980s design, and after almost two weeks with Ivy, our Siberian kitten, it stands out from everything else I've seen.

Why we needed it

In January 2025 we had one cat, with another on the way, and our cats don't have access to the garden. So I needed a solution that looked good enough to sit in the house and had all the smart functions I wanted. PetSnowy sent me the Snow+ free for this review, with no payment and no conditions on what I say.

The design is clever: it's basically two rooms. There's an entrance area with a carpet that catches the sand from the cat's paws, and then the actual litter chamber, where a rotating system cleans the litter and drops the waste into a sealed bag underneath.

Unboxing and controls

There's almost nothing to do: take it out of the box. You get a huge quick guide with tips on getting your pet used to it, and a "cheat sheet" inside the lid that explains what each light colour means. Very user-friendly. Three buttons handle the basics: start a cleaning cycle, empty the whole litter (the "bin" function) and recycle/clean. You can use it manually if you don't want another app.

Filling is from the top, not the side, which minimises spills, and there's a fill line to guide you. The waste tray holds 2.6 gallons. The company says one bag lasts up to two weeks. After 10 days with a kitten, mine was about half full.

The app

I use the app because it tells me when Ivy goes in, how long she stays, and her weight. As she's a kitten, I'm tracking that and adjusting her food with the vet. You can create a profile with a photo and weight, and it recognises which cat went in, which is great with more than one cat. It even sends small funny stories about your cat's visits, which put a smile on my face. You can schedule cleaning cycles and switch on a night light. One time she fell asleep in the entrance area and I got notification after notification that she was spending too long inside, so I turned that alert off.

Noise, smell and hygiene

I measured about 40 dB during cleaning (the company claims a maximum of 50 dB), which is quieter than a small crowd talking in the distance. The curtains scared Ivy at first. PetSnowy suggests treats and leaving the lid open, but I used the hard method and put her inside, mixing a bit of her old litter with the fine PetSnowy litter they sent. Now she comes and goes as she likes. She does carry quite a lot of sand into the entrance area. There's also a UV light that's meant to kill bacteria. I can't test that properly, but checking with my own UV torch, I found no biological residue on the litter.

My verdict

The only thing I'd improve: you can't see the waste without opening the bag. An alert when something looks wrong, maybe via a camera, would be the top feature for anyone who cares about their cat's health. Otherwise it's a great litter box, and honestly, if they hadn't sent it to me, I would have bought it. It's worth every penny, especially with more than one cat.
