When my twins were born I thought my days of playing with toys were over. The opposite happened. In October 2019 a box arrived from China with the Flytec SL-145A, a cheap 1/14 RC buggy, and I took it out with a GoPro and an Insta360 strapped on top.

A grown-up toy

About three years earlier I had become the father of two amazing twins, and since then I've been playing with my toys more and more, waiting for the day I can share my passions with them. The plan was to play with this RC car together, but they're still too young to appreciate it, so I'm afraid I'll be enjoying it on my own for a while.

The Flytec SL-145A is a 1/14 scale electric buggy on 2.4 GHz. It's a toy made for kids, but if you love photography and video making like I do, you can look at it from a different perspective: it's a cheap way to get low, fast, fun shots by mounting an action camera on it.

Testing it in Brindisi

After a short unboxing I took it out to test it on the field with my GoPro and my Insta360. It was the end of October in Brindisi and about 30 degrees, which is insane, but perfect for a day outdoors. I had a lot of fun.

Let's be clear: it's a toy. It wasn't as fast as I expected, but it was fast enough to have fun. The battery lasted no more than about 20 minutes before it died. But for a toy that costs around $40, what can you expect?
